BMI and calories: common questions
What is a healthy BMI for adults?
For adults, a BMI from 18.5 to 24.9 is generally considered the healthy range. Below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. In pounds and inches, multiply your weight by 703 and divide by your height in inches squared.
How does this tool estimate daily calories?
It uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, a widely used formula, to estimate the calories you burn at rest (your BMR). That figure is multiplied by your activity level to estimate maintenance calories, then adjusted up or down for your goal.
How fast is it safe to lose weight?
A gradual pace of about 0.25 to 0.5 kg (0.5 to 1 lb) a week is a common recommendation. Very low calorie intakes are not advised without medical supervision, so this calculator never goes below 1,200 calories a day for women or 1,500 for men.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
No. BMI is a quick screening guide and does not measure body fat. It can overstate risk for very muscular people and understate it for older adults who have lost muscle. It also does not apply to anyone under 18, or to pregnant or breastfeeding women.
